Technical Debt Quadrant
Martin Fowler expanded Ward Cunningham’s original technical debt metaphor into a two-by-two matrix: reckless vs. prudent on the X-axis and deliberate vs. inadvertent on the Y-access.
This framing is captured in his Technical Debt Quadrants concept and helps teams distinguish between strategic shortcuts and genuine negligence. The quadrant model is essential context for the Discover-Option-Action Cycle we use to manage technical investment.
